Because finches are interact most often with each other, they tend to be unhappy if they are by themselves. Purchase the birds in pairs so that there isn't any "bullying" going on inside of a cage if they are altogether. If there is an odd number, one finch may be picked on and if the bullying goes to far, it can result in the death of one of your pet birds. Keep them in even numbers and similar in size. The small bird always gets picked on, and feather pulling may take place. The more finches that you have, the bigger their shelter needs to be! It's highly suggested that if you own more than two finches, you shelter them in an aviary. That is a large bird cage, almost a small room that you can have inside of your house or outside. Either way, it gives them enough room to fly around in and exercise. They are winged animals and need to use their wings to adapt to their environment. Put a good amount of perches, branches, grass and greenery inside of the aviary. Make sure that each finch has their own feeder and water cup, and if the weather is warm put a couple misters around the aviary. The finch enjoys water and is very sensitive to heat just as they are sensitive to very cold weather. They can grow ill or even die from weather extremity. This is easier to control when the aviary temperature is controlled or it is located inside of your house. Finches are the best birds to have as pets because they don't ask much of you, only to provide them with shelter that is like a home. If that means you need to pull stuff out of your garden, then do it! If you choose to put a couple of finches in a cage or breed them in a cage then do make sure that the size of it is still large enough for them to fly around in. Give them the same environmental furniture just as you would an aviary, but when it comes to breeding you must build or buy a nest for the process to begin. Inform yourself on the breeding process before placing a male and female finch in the same cage!To care for your finches, provide them with seed food that should be available at a local pet store. Depending on the breed of the bird, you should buy a mixed seed or a regular seed. All finches enjoy fruits and vegetables which also brings nutrients into their diet. It's very important to provide the birds with supplements that you can mix into their food and water. This helps a growing bird to grow up healthy, and calls for healthy baby finches. When breeding it's beneficial to include supplements and vitamins into the mothers diet so that the babies are healthy. Change their water daily and always make sure that there is air circulation in and around their shelter. Finches as pets, are the best birds to take in and care for. Not to mention they incorporate beautiful colors into a home!
If you know that you have the time to care for a pet bird or breed birds then you are likely to appreciate them. Assure yourself that you can afford food and shelter for the finches, and keep informing yourself on the breeding cycle if you are interested. Sometimes it takes something different to intrigue us, and the way that birds interact with each other and adapt to their environment isn't seen often within our own home. You can learn a lot about the beautiful winged species if you just sit and watch. Providing them with more in the beginning will most often make the pet finch birds easy to maintain!
