Hitchcock usually gave some sort of warning to the audience that something scary was about to be shown. You just know when Mrs. Brenner sees the broken coffee cups hanging from their hooks that things are going to get worse.
@BohemianAsh I think the worse part is people missing the point Hitchcock was trying to make here.
He took a ridiculous B-movie premise. Something completely laughable. Birds. He made a great movie out of it. There is some kind of lesson there about carpenters and shoddy tools but I think it would be lost on humanity in general.
@mike33690 Yes. We want to see nameless two dimensional characters no one gives a shit be tortured to death in movies that should have ended two sequels ago, if they ever should have been filmed in the first place.

@romaneberle This. Psycho is scarier than almost any other slasher film, not because of what it shows us, but because of what it doesn’t. My grandmother was convinced she saw Norman Bates knife sink into that woman’s flesh- it didn’t. A person’s imagination is a powerful tool to turn against them.
Jaws: The shark looks fake and it isn’t particularly gory. Yet the directing and style and build up and tension and involvement in the characters makes it scarier than a thousand Saw movies.

@cr33pyGamer I’m a fan of Nolan’s but I must say I’ve never seen anything of his that horrified me. Nolan’s an excellent director and one of the best working in Hollywood today, but horror in Nolan’s films is more a type of, what they call on TV Tropes, Fridge Horror. No, Nolan’s more of a solid Neo-Noir type guy
@JarHarJar David Lynch really knows horror. Blue Velvet was creepy. Twin Peaks, a prime time TV show, managed to terrify me at least once. I think, if Hitchcock has an equal in the modern horror department, keeping in mind that neither really make ‘horror films’, David Lynch is it.
It may not be scary, in the modern sense, but the scene certainly is dark and Hitchcock certainly builds a reasonable level of suspense and fear in this scene.

This is more realistic in real life if you find a dead body there’s no dramatic music accompaning it. You’re getting chased by a killer the Halloween theme won’t play in the background. This is how finding a dead body would be like in real life.
